LRFD for Geotechnical Engineering Features: Deep Foundations: Lateral Analysis

Date & Time:
Mon, 04/07/2014 - 11:30am - 1:00pm
Location:
E.L. Robinson Engineering, 1801 Watermark Drive, Suite 310, Columbus, OH 43215

*Open only to Central Ohio Section Members
*Seating is limited to the first 25 people
*Bring your own lunch

Purpose and Background
This webinar offering concentrates on lateral analysis of deep foundations. Deep foundations are often used for structures which experience large lateral loads for which shallow foundations are not feasible due to large overturning moments and resultant load eccentricities. The LRFD platform offers a rational framework for performing lateral analysis of deep foundations. The webinar will be primarily based on the 6th Edition (2012) of LRFD Bridge Design Specifications developed by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). Applicable articles in Sections 3, 5, 6, 10, and 11 of AASHTO LRFD Specifications will be used as a basis of discussion. The webinar material will be applicable to different types of deep foundations such as driven piles, drilled shafts, and micropiles.

The webinar will include discussion on loads and limit states from a lateral analysis perspective, models for lateral soil resistance using soil-structure interaction concepts such as the p-y and the strain wedge methods, structural resistance of piles with emphasis on flexural resistance of reinforced concrete and steel piles, pile head fixity, group behavior, equivalent cantilever model, step-by-step method for lateral load analysis, extreme events, scour, and other special considerations such as downdrag, lateral squeeze and collapse susceptible soils. A detailed example problem will be included to demonstrate the application of LRFD principles.

The webinar assumes that the participant has a working knowledge of lateral load analysis including development of appropriate subsurface investigations and geotechnical data, interpretation of geotechnical data to develop geomaterial properties for lateral analysis, and use of commonly available software for lateral analysis such as COM624P. Accordingly, the webinar will concentrate on application of LRFD principles to lateral analysis of deep foundations.

2014 Spring Seminar

Water Resources for Shale Oil & Gas Operations in Ohio

At the end of 2013, Ohio had exceeded 1,000 permits for horizontal wells in the Utica shale formation. That number may triple in the next couple years. As demand for water to support operations increases, methods and decision-making processes of finding, storing and conveying fresh water are being developed. Regulations governing the storage and disposal of water are evolving. Technologies are being tested and employed to recycle and reuse wastewater. Learn about these topics from knowledgeable speakers with experience in the industry and management of Ohio’s water resources.

Road Diets

Date & Time:
Fri, 03/28/2014 - 12:00pm
Location:
Korda/Nemeth Engineering, Inc., 1650 Watermark Drive, Ste 200 Columbus, OH 43215

*Open only to Central Ohio Section Members
*Seating is limited to the first 25 people
*Bring your own lunch

Purpose and Background
A road diet represents the rechannelization of a roadway from four lanes, consisting of two travel lanes in each direction, to three lanes, consisting of one travel lane in each direction separated by a two-way left-turn lane. The additional roadway width that results from this reconfiguration is then used to establish bicycle lanes, accommodate on-street parking, or create additional separation between the motoring public and pedestrians and bicyclists.
