2014 STEM Expo

The ASCE Central Ohio Section welcomed over 140 students in grades K – 8 at the STEM Expo on February 22, 2014. The students explored hands-on activities and exhibits in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields sponsored by local firms, professional societies, and educational departments. In addition to over 20 interactive activities and exhibits, the students and their parents were able to tour the Ohio State Center for Automotive Research and participate in an interactive program by BUGMAN Education. Students also received take home activity bags provided by HR Gray.

This educational outreach event was organized by the ASCE Younger Member Group and held at The Metro Early College High School. The event was advertised through Columbus area-wide elementary and middle schools, where information was shared through classroom and upper grade level science teachers as well as electronic media outlets. The cost for the venue was covered through the State Public Affairs Grant program, while all activities and exhibits were provided on a volunteer basis. We have a group package of tickets to the Blue Jackets-Capitals game on Thursday, January 30th. Tickets are $10 per member and $15 per non-ASCE guest. We’re accepting pre-payment now using Paypal (see below). As these tickets usually sell for $50 face value, it’s a heckuva deal! Prior to the game, we’ll have a social for the game attendees put on by the Younger Members group at Brother’s, so even if you don’t want to go to the hockey game, please come out for drinks, food and fellowship!

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium visitors soon will have the chance to experience the African plain here in Central Ohio. The Zoo is currently developing a $30.5 million dollar, 43 acre development that is scheduled to open this year. This 43 acre development is phase one of a plan to build up the 110 acres to the west of the zoo’s 8-acre $20 million polar bear exhibit that opened in 2010.

Topic: Temporary Pre-Engineered Structures Featuring the Railroad Bridge over Alkire Road in
Southwest Franklin County

This presentation will touch upon the process of erecting pre-engineered bridges. Among several other national and international projects, the temporary railroad bridge over Alkire Road in southwest Columbus at Harrisburg Pike (US 62-SR3) will be featured. The 1902 railroad stone arch bridge over Alkire Road was replaced due to increased traffic, narrowness, and vertical and horizontal clearance issues. The bridge replacement construction had to be performed with limited railroad track use outages during so called “Railroad Holidays” or slow scheduled train movement time periods. Any outages beyond these “Railroad Holidays” resulted in fees to the project for the added mileage for train detours. With limited work space to build the new structure, the temporary pre-engineered railroad bridge considerably reduced the inconvenience to railroad and Alkire Road vehicle traffic and avoided any fees due to track outages.
