OSIS Odor control facility

We will present this year's awards for Outstanding Civil Engineer of Central Ohio and Outstanding Section Member of ASCE Central Ohio, and hear about the OSIS Downtown Odor Control Facility.

The OSIS Downtown Area Odor Control Facilities project was devised in 2007 in response to complaints of odors through the downtown riverfront corridor. Engineering analyses determined that the source of the odors was the Olentangy / Scioto Interceptor Sewer (OSIS), which traverses the downtown corridor. Further analysis determined that bio-filters would be the most cost effective method of treatment. While odor mitigation was the main focus of the project, the odor control facilities will also provide ventilation for the OSIS Augmentation and Relief Sewer (OARS), which is a deep tunnel that will convey overflows from combined sewers to the Jackson Pike Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The presentation will cover the goals of the project, the field investigations performed to determine the odor source and sewer ventilation requirements, the design of the biofilter system, an overview of the construction process and an update on the performance of the facilities since construction was completed.

The Central Ohio Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is sponsoring a "Civil Engineering Career Day". The purpose of the program is to expose high school juniors to the profession in hopes that they may consider civil engineering as a career. In the past, the program has received national recognition from ASCE for the excellent exposure that the students and community receive as part of the program. This year the program will take place April 24, 2014.

Practical Design of Bolted and Welded Steel Connections

Purpose and Background
Design of steel connections goes hand-in-hand with the design of structural members. Quite often the connection proves to be the weakest point of the structure, with predictable consequences. Indeed, a number of recent construction failures and accidents that led to inevitable litigation involved steel connections. There is plenty of information on the topic, but some engineers may not have kept up with the changes in the authoritative documents and still use obsolete design procedures. While many of the old designs worked well enough, there is a good practical reason to learn about the new approaches, as they tend to yield more economical solutions.

This webinar provides a concise and to-the-point overview of the most practical issues involved in the design of bolted and welded connections found in structural steel buildings. The presentation starts with a summary of the main issues, including the relevant AISC documents. It then proceeds to the main subject the practical methods of designing bolted and welded connections. The instructor examines the relevant changes that have taken place in the AISC Specification and AISC Manual. A number of design examples using the tables in the Manual and other sources illustrate the practical design approaches to handling groups of bolts and welds.

The presentation continues with a discussion of simple shear connections and how they are different from moment connections. (The latter are discussed in a separate ASCE webinar Moment-Resisting Connections In Steel Structures.) Throughout the webinar, the instructor points out some of the issues that are still not fully resolved and those where design practices tend to differ among engineers.

Stormwater Infiltration Basin Design - Design Consideration and Example Projects

Purpose and Background
As the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), state and local water quality management regulations increasingly limit impacts to receiving water, stormwater management and the use of Best Management Practices (BMPs) have become a primary design consideration for most civil engineering projects in the U.S. Many states provide stormwater BMP design guidance documents to aid engineers with the selection and proper design of many types of structural BMPs. However, with the variability of soils, topography and other design constraints that occur between sites, it is often difficult to determine which BMP will be the most appropriate and cost effective solution. This webinar will review guidance documents and use example projects to demonstrate how to determine when a site is appropriate for the utilization of dry bottom infiltration basins that rely on in-situ soils for stormwater quantity and quality treatment.
