Younger Members:

I hope everyone has had a great Summer. As you know the Central Ohio Section does not hold meetings in the months of July and August; however, several events have occurred in the past couple months.

Region 3 Assembly:

On August 14 and 15 the first ASCE Region 3 Assembly was held in Chicago, IL. This assembly was held to help promote communication within Region 3 of ASCE with includes Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Michigan. This assembly came about to help promote the sharing of ideas in the Region and Younger Members were encouraged to attend.

Section President- Gerry Lynskey, Region 3 Governor from the Central Ohio Section - Dave Prichard, Section Member Kevin Carpenter, and myself attended. The assembly begin Friday at noon and concluded on Saturday at noon. Several workshops were held on topics from membership to government relations. We also had the pleasure of seeing presentation on the O'Hare airport expansion and the maintenance of the City of Chicago's bridges.

CYP Leadership Conference:

As a local young professional group we were invited to the Columbus Young Professionals Leadership Conference on August 22, 2009. The conference was held at the Hilton Hotel at Easton on Saturday Morning with a reception at the Governor's Residence in the afternoon. Participants had the opportunity to meet the Governor and First Lady and enjoy a cookout in the garden. YM Vice President Kris Ruggles and myself attended the conference and had the pleasure of meeting many of the leaders of younger members groups from all over Ohio.

During the reception I had the opportunity to meet the Director of the Ohio Department of Administrative Services. From this meeting ASCE has been invited to a briefing on the proposed construction reforms in the state which included: design build project delivery, removal of the multiple prime requirement, and the strengthening of MBE and DBE requirements.

Dear Younger Members and Student Members:

We are happy to announce the publication of Issue #67 of the Younger Member Newsletter. The Committee on Younger Members (CYM) publishes this newsletter three times per year in an effort to keep Younger Members apprised of successful events, upcoming activities, award deadlines, and contact information. We also include Student Members on our distribution list as our way of illustrating the potential resources Younger Members provide to students and encouraging their involvement in Younger Member activities, both now and after graduation. One of the primary functions of CYM is to ease the transition of Student Members into the mainstream of ASCE.

Most of you should be able to access the Younger Member Newsletter by using Adobe Acrobat Reader* with the click of your mouse at http://www.asce.org/inside/files/pdf/issue67.pdf<http://lyris.asce.org/t/7373121/55452803/8074/0/>; however, if you should experience any problems, please feel free to contact Nancy Berson at nberson at asce.org<mailto:nberson at asce.org>.

Speaker: H. Wayne Jones, PE - Senior Regional Engineer for the Asphalt Institute

Topic: Warm Mix Asphalt

The asphalt industry has started using a new technology call Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA). WMA started in Europe, but its use is rapidly expanding here in the U.S. There are several processes that allow the manufacture, transporting, and installation of asphalt mixtures from 50°F to 100°F cooler than traditional temperatures. One of the technologies even allows the mixture to be placed below 212°F. When the temperature is lowered that much, a whole host of environmental and construction benefits become a reality, such as lower fuel and energy usage, less greenhouse gases, longer paving seasons, and better performing pavements.
