Topic: Design and Construction of Runway 10R/28L Replacement Program at Port Columbus International Airport

(Online registration and payment available, see bottom of page.)

The Columbus Regional Airport Authority is currently constructing the Runway 10R/28L Replacement program at Port Columbus International Airport. The new 10,113-foot replacement asphalt runway is located 702 feet south of the existing south runway. Paving was completed in early November 2012 and the navigational aids, airfield signage and lighting are currently being installed in preparation for the FAA flight checks scheduled for March and May 2013. Commissioning date of the replacement runway is June 27, 2013.

The final phase of the replacement runway program will commence immediately following runway commissioning with the conversion of the existing runway to an additional parallel taxiway.

The presentation will cover the unique planning and design issues of the runway program; the coordination efforts of creating the safest working environment for construction immediately adjacent to an active runway; construction coordination amongst multiple contractors and strategies used to overcome the wettest year in Columbus history during our subgrade preparation and base course construction efforts.

December Lunch Meeting

Date & Time:
Thu, 12/20/2012 - 11:30am
Location:
Villa Milano, 1630 Schrock Road, Columbus 43229

Topic: City of Columbus Solids Treatment and Utilization Master Plan - STUMP

(Online registration and payment available, see bottom of page.)

Drafting the most recent version of the City of Columbus Department of Public Utilities wastewater treatment solids master plan incorporated a customized state-of-the-art material flow computer model populated with detailed operational data from the City’s WWTPs. Numerous combinations of biosolids treatment and distribution scenarios were examined and comparatively rated for the economic, energy and emissions attributes of each.

The result of this investigation galvanized the case for DPU to further increase the beneficial uses of biosolids, supporting Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman’s “Get Green Columbus” goals of reducing energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions of City facilities and diverting City byproducts from the waste stream. Thus, where previous master plans had referred to solids disposal, this latest version has been aptly titled the City of Columbus Solids Treatment and Utilization Master Plan (STUMP).

November Lunch Meeting

Date & Time:
Thu, 11/15/2012 - 11:30am
Location:
Villa Milano, 1630 Schrock Road, Columbus 43229

Topic: Broadmeadows Pedestrian Bridge over the Olentangy River

Joint meeting with SEAoO

(Online registration and payment available, see bottom of page.)

The artistic Broadmeadows Pedestrian Bridge over the Olentangy River just south of Antrim Park, visible along the east side of State Route 315, will be the topic of discussion. As usual with bridges, structural (steel & concrete), geotechnical and hydraulic engineering all go into the design. However, David Jones will present important, unique design considerations for pedestrian bridges made with glue laminated timber arches e.g., corrosion considerations of fasteners with treated wood, the unique criss-cross arches and other design features.

October Lunch Meeting

Date & Time:
Thu, 10/25/2012 - 11:30am - 1:00pm
Location:
The Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, OH 43210

Topic: 5th Avenue Dam Removal, Bank Restoration and Lower Olentangy River Ecosystem Project

Joint meeting with Columbus Engineers' Club

(Online registration and payment available, see bottom of page.)

The City of Columbus is currently removing the 5th Avenue Dam from the Olentangy River. The dam, 500 feet wide and 8 feet tall, was initially constructed in 1935 to provide a constant pool for the cooling water intake at The Ohio State University power plant. The power plant no longer requires cooling water pumped from the river; therefore the pool created by the dam is no longer needed.

The impounded segment of the river, extending several thousand feet upstream of the dam, is not meeting use attainment goals set by the Ohio EPA. Removal of the dam and restoration of the Olentangy River will result in net improvements to water quality and aquatic community composition and further efforts to meet future use attainment goals.

In this presentation, we will discuss the history behind the project; the multi-disciplinary, collaborative effort that addressed the various facets of the project; and provide an update on the current status of the construction.

September Dinner Meeting

Date & Time:
Thu, 09/20/2012 - 5:30pm
Location:
LaScala Restaurant, 4199 West Dublin Granville Road Dublin, OH 43017

Topic: Heavyweight Concrete for Radiation Shielding at the New OSU Hospital

Joint meeting with OSPE and ACI

(Online registration and payment available, see bottom of page.)

The presentation will cover the construction of the Radiation Oncology Vaults at the New OSU Wexner Medical Center James Cancer Hospital currently under construction. The radiation vaults are located between the 2nd and 4th floor of the hospital at a height of about 45 to 65 feet above the ground level and are the largest suspended vaults ever constructed in the United States.

Bill Feltz of Anderson Concrete will give a presentation on the production of the heavyweight concrete used for the cast-in-place portion of the radiation shielding vaults. The heavywieight concrete had a unit weight of 260 pcf and needed to be pumped into place.

Nigel Carter of Turner Construction will give a presentation on the construction of the radiation vaults. Particular attention will be given to the challenges presented by the decision to locate the vaults on Level Two of the Hospital and the constructability issues associated with this design decision.
