From MRomanello at smeinc.com Wed Jan 16 17:04:26 2013 From: MRomanello at smeinc.com (Michael Romanello) Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2013 23:04:26 +0000 Subject: [ASCE YM] ASCE Younger Member Trivia Night Message-ID: <686BF082A1441C43882E83A7C1FC11B91637897E@RAL-MBX1.smeinc.com> Younger Members, I hope everyone's new year has been exciting and prosperous thus far. The Younger Member Group will be sponsoring a social event at Buffalo Wild Wings on Bethel Road on Thursday, February 7th starting at 6:00 pm. We will be playing buzztime trivia and appetizers will be provided. I strongly encourage you to come out to the event - we are hoping to find some new Younger Members that want to get more involved as we try to plan some new educational outreach and community service projects. I recently attended the Central Region Younger Member Council in Milwaukee which was a joint conference with the Section & Branch leaders and Student Chapters. Representative from Younger Member groups were able to get to together to share ideas and we were updated on ASCE from the national perspective as well. I wanted to make everyone aware of ASCE's 3 strategic initiatives: Sustainability, rehabilitating our nation's infrastructure, and 'Raising the Bar' (on educational requirements for licensure). You have probably heard these initiatives at some point or another through emails or publications and I feel it's important to be informed on each of these as our regional governors have begun to solicit thoughts on these from a local perspective. I've included hyperlinks to ASCE's website where more information is available. I look forward to seeing you at trivia night and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you, Michael Romanello Younger Member President ASCE Central Ohio Region ________________________________ Michael T. Romanello, P.E. The Younger Member Group has sent a representative to this conference the past several years and would like to continue that precedent. This is an excellent opportunity to network with other younger members and section representatives. In addition to the Younger Member breakout sessions, the conference will be voting on the Region 3 Resolution regarding "Raise the Bar" and the ASCE President Elect will be giving a State of the Society address. Please let me know by Thursday, July 11 if you are interested in attending on behalf of our group - all expenses are reimbursable. The conference begins on Friday afternoon and ends on Saturday around lunch, meaning you would only miss one day of work. With the great weather on tap (low 70s at 6 PM & sunshine), I'll have us set up outside on the patio. I'll be wearing a black Pirates baseball cap as an identifier if you haven't met me yet. We have happy hour from 6-8 w/ bucket specials for drinks and I've set up BBQ brisket, wings and nachos for food for our group, so no one should go hungry. There's also bar trivia at 8 afterwards for those of you who feel "scholarly" inclined. Having played trivia there on Wednesdays many times before, it can be as many as 15-20 teams competing for $50, so it's a shark tank of otherwise useless knowledge. Remember, Coaches is at 1480 Bethel Road, on the same plaza as Texas Roadhouse and Buffalo Wild Wings. If you have trouble finding the place, my cell is 412-398-0814, please don't hesitate to call. See you all tonight! Matt Baxendell, PE Engineer, M. I believe it starts at 7 PM, but I'm not certain, I'll get the time for everyone when I speak with Greg next week. There was also substantial interest in having the YM group meet on occasion w/ students to do some sort of drafting workshop (Microstation, AutoCAD), so I'll keep everyone updated if that's something they want to follow up on with us. Thanks for coming everyone on Wednesday and if anyone is coming to the student social as well on the 30th, please let myself or Jason Ross know so we can let the student chapter know. Last year, AWWA visited the Olentangy Augmentation Relief Sewer (OARS) site for a project presentation and viewing of the tunneling equipment while it was on the ground surface. Now, the site is fully engaged in tunneling operations out of Shaft 2, as well as construction of the OARS Diversions Structure, Pump Electric Building, West Gate Chamber, and Flow Diversion Structure. Below are the details to join the project update tour! This will be a surface site visit only; we will not be going down in the tunnel. When: Thursday, September 26th at 4:00 pm Where: Meet at the trailers at 2020 Jackson Pike, Columbus OH 43223 What: We will listen to a brief update on the project status and then walk the site. REQUIRED PPE: hard hat, eye protection, safety vest, steel-toe boots (Hearing protection is also suggested) The size of the tour is limited, so please RSVP to Anna Santino (Anna.Santino at mwhglobal.com) by Wednesday, September 25th to reserve your spot. Also, let me or Anna know if you would like to attend, but do not have access to a hard had, eye protection, or a safety vest. Thanks! Stephanie A. Phillips, P.E. I will be attending, so anyone else who wants to come join the fun is more than welcome. I've listed the email I sent out last week with the pertinent info. 2) The STEM Expo planning kicks off on Tuesday night at S&ME where Mike Romanello will be hosting our first planning meeting. If you want to go to either event and need more information, please don't hesitate to get back to me. We've also got some other good stuff in the works, I've already reserved Brothers for our shared OTEC social with ASHE, ECC, OSUPE & WTS on October 22nd. I've also got some irons in the fire for a potential big event in November too that we might have open to the entire Central Ohio group, so I'll let everyone know as soon as we've got details worked out! Cheers and have a great weekend! Matt Baxendell, PE Engineer, M. Could everyone interested in helping out with the CAD teaching let me know what nights they would prefer so that I can start to set up a few dates? I was thinking no more frequent than every two weeks or so. We're also putting the final touches on a shared game watch party for November 16th for the Ohio State at Illinois game---likely at the B-Dubs on campus---that we'll be opening up to the whole section to attend, so pencil that date in as well. I'll have a more formal announcement on that one in a couple weeks here once it is finalized. Thanks! Matt Baxendell, PE Engineer, M.
