Subject: Columbus Zoo Sustainability Tour

Hi Young Professionals!

The Ohio Section AWWA YP Committee is sponsoring a Columbus Zoo Sustainability Tour, focusing on their new integrated water treatment plant/geothermal system which the Zoo believes to be unique in the world due to its ability to provide two uses for the water extracted from the wells (non-potable water and geothermal heating and cooling), as well as the fact that it starts as an open source geothermal system and recycles through the Zoo's internal water system. The system heats and cools five Zoo buildings including the Education center at Polar Frontier. With the creativity of the Zoo staff and its consultants, the project was designed to integrate two capital projects, the new water treatment plant and the geothermal system, into one project thus saving several million dollars in capital cost. It is believed the synergy identified in this integrated system may have application in other water treatment type projects.

The tour will be conducted by senior Zoo officials responsible for planning and operating the systems and the terrific Zoo volunteers who gave their time so we could enjoy this event. It will start with an overview of their energy conservation projects, a walk through the Warehouse to view an energy efficiency upgrade consisting of new lights and the first installation of Ciralight "Smart" Skylights in the State of Ohio, and then over to the Facilities building to see the geothermal system. The tour will end at the Zoo's Polar Frontier Exhibit with a talk on the conservation measures used there.

After the tour, we will be free to visit the zoo and see the animals! Friends and family are welcome. For those in the tour group, discounted tickets are available for $10/ea.

The event will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, August 11 at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and should take around 60 to 90 minutes. Additional details will follow, including the exact meeting location. Our group size will be limited to 20 people, so please RSVP by Tuesday, August 7. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thanks,
Dan Freedman
SE District YP Chair
