Safety improvements at these locations have always been a priority and pose a challenge for most transportation agencies. Because crashes are typically complex events, a variety of mitigation measures have been tried with varying degrees of success, including the modern roundabout. This webinar will focus on the best practices for designing the geometric aspects of roundabouts to maximize the safety of all road users using guidance from the latest publications from FHWA and TRB. Case studies will be used to highlight problems that can result from roundabouts that are not designed in accordance with best practices. This webinar is co-sponsored by ASCE's Transportation and Development Institute and ASCE Continuing Education. RSVP to jpajk at franklincountyengineer.org by Tuesday, May 14, 2013. See the ASCE website for more info. The Central Ohio Section of ASCE sponsors free continuing education webinars as a service to our members. These webinars are produced by ASCE and normally cost $250 or $300 for ASCE members. However, the Central Ohio Section is paying the registration fee and inviting any interested section members to attend for free. Just RSVP by the deadline. Seating is limited, so do not delay. The project consists of a street and drainage system for an isolated residential area at the edge of the small town of San Pedro Puxtla. The street, which is now nearly complete, connects the Las Pilitas neighborhood to the rest of the town, eliminates unhealthful exposure to contaminated drainage, and allows safer access to the residences in the rainy season. Engineering challenges on the project included routing of floodwater, disposal of large boulders, limited space and difficult access. Completion was further complicated by local perceptions, language, politics, and funding. The project has received partial funding from both the Central Ohio Section and ASCE national. Speaker: Amanda Engle, PE manages design projects at the Columbus office of E. L. Robinson Engineers, primarily in the area of highway bridge design, and is a graduate of the Ohio State University. Amanda is the founder and past president of the Central Ohio Chapter of Engineers Without Borders, and project lead for the municipal services project in San Pedro Puxtla, El Salvador, a project that moved into the major construction phase in March of 2012. She also helped establish and mentor the OSU EWB Chapter and accompanied the OSU students on several implementation trips to carry out their portion of the El Salvador project over the past several years. All the while maintaining a full-time position at E. L Robinson Engineers in the Columbus office. She was selected for the Outstanding Civil Engineer Award by the Central Ohio Section of ASCE in 2012. CPD Hours: A certificate for one (1) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) will be issued at the conclusion of the program. The meeting will also include award of this year's Civil Engineer and ASCE Section Engineer. Date & Time: Thursday, 5/16/2013 11:30am: Registration begins 12:00 pm: Presentation and lunch Location: Villa Milano, 1630 Schrock Road, Columbus 43229 http://www.villamilano.com/ Menu: Lasagna (with meat sauce) or Lasagna Cacciatora (Vegetarian). Please specify at time of registration. CPD Hours: A certificate for one (1) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hour will be issued at the conclusion of the program. Robinson Engineering, 1801 Watermark Drive, Suite 310 Columbus, Ohio 43215 E.L. Robinson is presenting a three day seminar on Earth Retaining Structures in Columbus, Ohio, on May 29-31, 2013. The seminar will be presented by Mr. Jerry DiMaggio and Dr. Jamal Nusairat. The goal of this course is to provide agencies with state-of-the-practice design tools and construction techniques to expand implementation of safe and cost effective earth retention technologies. This course addresses the selection, design, construction, and performance of earth retaining structures used for support of fills and excavations or cut slopes. Instructors cover factors that affect wall selection, including contracting approaches with an emphasis on required bidding documents for each approach. Class discussions will include design procedures and case histories, demonstrating the selection, design, and performance of various earth retaining structures. Detailed information on subsurface investigation, soil and rock property design parameter selection, lateral earth pressures for wall system design, and load and resistance factor design (LRFD) for retaining walls are provided. Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to: - Describe potential applications for Earth Retaining Structures (ERS) - Select a technically appropriate and cost-effective ERS - Select appropriate material properties, soil design parameters, and earth pressure diagrams - Perform design analysis and prepare conceptual designs - Review contractor submitted documents - Discuss contracting methods - Describe construction and inspection activities for ERS Registration: Please see the brochure for registration information. The deadline for registration is May 20, 2013. There is a discount for registrations received by May 15. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Water balance covers (also known as evapotranspiration, or ET, covers and alternative covers) are sustainable final covers for waste containment facilities, including landfills, mine waste repositories, low level radioactive waste disposal sites, and contaminated materials left in place during site remediation. Soils are used to store infiltrating precipitation in the cover profile during wet periods, and plants and the atmosphere are used to extract the stored water during drier periods. WBCs rely on natural hydrologic principles functioning in the surrounding landscape, and thus can be more sustainable than conventional engineered barrier systems that work against natural principles. WBCs typically are less expensive to construct than conventional covers and are simpler and less expensive to maintain.
