Numerous combinations of biosolids treatment and distribution scenarios were examined and comparatively rated for the economic, energy and emissions attributes of each. The result of this investigation galvanized the case for DPU to further increase the beneficial uses of biosolids, supporting Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman's "Get Green Columbus" goals of reducing energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions of City facilities and diverting City byproducts from the waste stream. Thus, where previous master plans had referred to solids disposal, this latest version has been aptly titled the City of Columbus Solids Treatment and Utilization Master Plan (STUMP). With the passage of amendments to the Federal Clean Water Act in 1987, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) was required to implement a program to regulate the discharge of storm water from construction activities under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). With the advent of NPDES Phase II in 2003, additional construction projects became regulated. Since the release of the first construction general permit in the early 1990s, engineers, reviewers, and construction contractors have struggled to understand and comply with EPA requirements. The EPA has continued to revise and develop the permit program by issuing subsequent regulations, permits, and guidance documents. As enforcement of Clean Water Act violations increase at construction sites, those responsible for compliance need to understand what they must do in order to avoid stiff penalties and to keep neighboring streams and properties clean. Families displaced from their historic lands by landslides resettled on a former landfill at the edge of town known as Las Pilitas. Due to rugged terrain, Las Pilitas is cut off from amenities available to the rest of San Pedro Puxtla, such as treated drinking water, trash services and systems for handling waste water. Las Pilitas is set apart from the community not only by lower sanitation levels, but also by its lower standard of living. Their project aims to not only bring healthier living conditions to the families, but also include them more thoroughly in the social and economic life of the larger community. A critical first step in meeting these basic needs is to construct a street, with proper drainage systems, connecting Las Pilitas to San Pedro Puxtla. Without a street, the neighborhood's topography makes it impossible to properly provide other health and sanitation services. In March 2012 latrines, retaining walls and drainage works were installed by a team of a dozen US volunteers and many local workers. Two travel teams returned recently from El Salvador where the street construction project is progressing quickly. One third of the street is paved while the other two thirds are slated for paving soon. In order to prevent construction delays, we need an additional $6000 in donations soon. * * *Please consider donating to the project using the link below. **Ask your friends, family, co-workers and company to do the same.* **** https://ssl.charityweb.net/ewbusa/pfp/laspilitasroadconnection.htm **** You can see more information about the project in the attached file and on their website: WWW.EWBCOH.ORG I personally supported EWB through this campaign with a donation of $100. The Central Ohio Section of ASCE donated $1,000. However, they are still less than half way to their goal. Please donate to this worthy effort in *any amount*! *-Peter Narsavage* -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
