H. WU DISTINGUISHED LECTURE April 5, 2011 - 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM Room 100 Scott Lab - 201 W 19th Avenue UNCERTAINTY, RELIABILITY, AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING (OR, RBD - THE GOOD, BAD & UGLY) Dr. Fred H. Kulhawy, P.E., G.E., Distinguished Member, ASCE Professor Emeritus of Civil/Geotechnical Engineering Cornell University Ithaca, New York, USA Abstract: During the 1960s, the first civil engineers began to focus on the very fundamental role of uncertainty in geotechnical engineering practice and design. This seminal work illustrated clearly that proper geotechnical design should be based on probabilistic, not deterministic, principles. Nearly five decades later, our profession is still trying to address this reality. This lecture focuses on some of these issues, with particular emphasis on reliability-based design (RBD) of foundations and the necessary calibrations behind RBD that are critical but are largely "invisible". Some key methods of calibration are discussed, including issues ranging from the basic assumptions involved, distributions of important variables, uncertainties in both load and resistance, target reliability, and many other relevant factors. The importance of clear and thorough property characterization is particularly stressed. The goal is to assist engineers in understanding the level of sophistication, or lack thereof, in different approaches to calibrations, which then translates into the degree of confidence one can have in a particular calibration or code. The "good, bad, and ugly" issues involved are noted, as seen by the writer during thirty years of work on this topic. Dr. Kulhawy is an internationally-known educator, researcher, and consultant with over 45 years' experience in geotechnical engineering. ?He has lectured and practiced around the world, and his seminal research is widely known and adopted. ?He has garnered numerous awards for his work from ASCE, ADSC, DFI, IEEE, Canadian Geotechnical Society, and others, including the ASCE Terzaghi Award and Norman Medal, election to Distinguished Membership in ASCE, and the CGS Meyerhof Award. CentralOhio ASCE is providing a seminar on April 19th on subjects of Low ImpactDevelopments (LID), LEED and stormwater nonpoint pollution prevention BestManagement Practices (BMPs) as related to and with help of OEPA. Attached is an electronic brochure for theconference. It provides 6 PDH units on atopic of current importance to many ASCE members at a modest cost ($100 formembers. $120 for non-members. $30 for students). Please click here to register now: http://www.centralohioasce.com/seminar Over the last severalyears there has been a rapid movement to implement low impact development (LID)design concepts and green infrastructure. LID designs strive to minimizeland disturbance and impervious cover, maintain predevelopment hydrology andmanage stormwater using smaller scale decentralized best managementpractices. Green infrastructure generally refers to a suite of stormwatermanagement strategies such as green roofs, rain gardens, riparian buffers, permeable pavements, and rainwater harvesting that is intended to reduce theamount of runoff reaching our receiving waters. While most projects canaccommodate at least some of these green design concepts, design challengesoften arise in urban areas where it?s common to encounter existingutilities, limited land availability, and poor or contaminated soils. Inthese instances it is often possible to achieve many of the fundamentals of LIDdesign by incorporating rainwater harvesting and/or underground stormwater managementstrategies into the site design. This session willaddress completed and current watershed-based balanced growth plans, withdiscussion of local balanced growth watershed projects, lessons learned, andincentives for local government to participate. Information on a casestudy project to address barriers in implementation of Best Practices forStormwater will be provided, as well as resources available to localcommunities interested in implementing Best Practices in their planning andzoning. We will discuss the recommendations of the statewide Best LocalLand Use Practices program. Information about development andconservation priority practices for local governments, and assistance availablefor education and implementation, will be addressed. Plans for 2011include progress on the watershed plans, addressing the needs of urban andfirst suburb areas, continued exploration of issues affecting sitedevelopment, water resources and economic development, and development ofnetworks of practitioners in eight regions of Ohio. This presentationwill also provide a regulatory overview of stormwater management and the trendsthat are driving the movement toward Green Infrastructure. This will befollowed with an overview of Low Impact Development and Green Infrastructureconcepts. We will also explore the basics of rainwater harvestingincluding example layouts and key components, and highlight the variousunderground stormwater management strategies that can augment LID designs alongwith the latest research and performance expectations for thesepractices. However, due to the high variability of the materials with which we deal (e.g., soil stratigraphy, shear strength, permeability, etc.), the values and conditions that are predicted do not always match those that are experienced. This may result in an over-designed but less economical structure, or an under-designed and unsafe structure. The Geotechnical Group of the ASCE Cincinnati Section is issuing this Call for Papers with emphasis on "Lessons Learned: Failures and Forensics" for the 42nd Annual Ohio River Valley Soils Seminar (ORVSS XLII) on October 21st, 2011 at the Millennium Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. Papers may include geotechnical design, instrumentation, investigation, construction, case histories, etc. that cover pertinent topics, which may include, but are not limited to, building foundations, dams and levees, earth retention systems, roadways, tunnels, and waterfront development. Papers should highlight innovative techniques or technologies implemented in forensic studies, predicted versus actual performance of structures, and innovative construction practices resulting from lessons learned. Papers will be selected to be presented during the one-day seminar with the papers distributed to the attendees as part of the seminar proceedings. The goal of ORVSS XLII is to provide Geotechnical Engineers, Geologists, Contractors, Material Suppliers, and other geotechnical practitioners an opportunity to share lessons learned on previous projects in order to continue the advancement of our professional field. You can find out more about the Order at www.order-of-the-engineer.org . -Peter ---------------------------------------- From: coefac-bounces at lists.service.ohio-state.edu [mailto:coefac-bounces at lists.service.ohio-state.edu] On Behalf Of Robert J Gustafson Sent: Wednesday, March 30, 2011 12:51 PM To: COEFAC at lists.service.ohio-state.edu Subject: [Coefac] Invitation to Order of Engineer Membership Engineering Faculty, In light of the pride and dedication you consistently show to the engineering profession, we want to give you the opportunity to join the Order of the Engineer by participating in an induction ceremony this Spring. The Order of the Engineer (http://www.order-of-the-engineer.org/) is an organization created to promote a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession. There are never meetings to attend or dues to pay. Instead, Order members foster a unity of purpose by honoring a lifelong pledge to ???uphold devotion to the standards and dignity of the Engineering Profession. Members are given a stainless steel ring which they are encouraged to wear on the small finger of their working hand as a reminder of their obligations. Induction into the Order is considered to be a wedding of engineers to their profession. This is a chance to make a resounding statement of your pride in your profession and your understanding of its weighty ethical responsibilities. All individuals holding a degree in engineering and students within one year of graduation are eligible to participate. The ceremony is organized by the Ohio Gamma chapter of Tau Beta Pi, an engineering honorary. This year's ceremony will be held on Monday, April 25 at 7:00pm in the Interfaith Prayer Room at the Ohio Union. The ceremony will take less than an hour and refreshments will be provided. At the ceremony you will receive an Obligation Certificate and the stainless steel ring. There is a one-time fee of $12 associated with the certificate, ring, and lifetime membership in the organization. After filling out the attached sign up form, please mail or drop off your form and $12 payment (cash or check made out to Tau Beta Pi-Ohio Gamma) in a sealed envelope at the following address: Lisa Miyake 244 Hitchcock Hall 2070 Neil Avenue Columbus, OH, 43210 Note: the form requires you to specify the ring size of your small finger for the stainless steel ring. There is a ring sizer available in Hitchcock 244 where the forms are collected. We can adjust size after the ceremony if needed. Forms must be submitted by Friday, April 8 at 5:00pm. Finally, we ask that you consider speaking with your Senior-level students about joining. We are making an effort this year to increase graduating students' awareness of this organization, and you can greatly help this endeavor by making an announcement during the first few weeks of your senior level or graduate classes this quarter. Keep in mind that undergraduates must be graduating in Spring 2011, Summer 2011, Autumn 2011, or Winter 2012 to be eligible to participate. We will be sending out notifications of the ceremony by email to all Seniors and Graduate Students, but we expect that an announcement from you will resonate much more with students than emails from us! Thanks for your help! Interested in becoming a member of the Order of the Engineer? If so, please attend our Facebook event, http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=161045420618868. Do not hesitate to email us with any questions. I appreciate your time, and I look forward to seeing you on April 25. Thanks, Mike Miller Dr. Dr. Robert J.
