LID designs strive to minimize land disturbance and impervious cover, maintain predevelopment hydrology and manage stormwater using smaller scale decentralized best management practices. Green infrastructure generally refers to a suite of stormwater management strategies such as green roofs, rain gardens, riparian buffers, permeable pavements, and rainwater harvesting that is intended to reduce the amount of runoff reaching our receiving waters. While most projects can accommodate at least some of these green design concepts, design challenges often arise in urban areas where it's common to encounter existing utilities, limited land availability, and poor or contaminated soils. In these instances it is often possible to achieve many of the fundamentals of LID design by incorporating rainwater harvesting and/or underground stormwater management strategies into the site design. This session will address completed and current watershed-based balanced growth plans, with discussion of local balanced growth watershed projects, lessons learned, and incentives for local government to participate. Information on a case study project to address barriers in implementation of Best Practices for Stormwater will be provided, as well as resources available to local communities interested in implementing Best Practices in their planning and zoning. We will discuss the recommendations of the statewide Best Local Land Use Practices program. Information about development and conservation priority practices for local governments, and assistance available for education and implementation, will be addressed. Plans for 2011 include progress on the watershed plans, addressing the needs of urban and first suburb areas, continued exploration of issues affecting site development, water resources and economic development, and development of networks of practitioners in eight regions of Ohio. This presentation will also provide a regulatory overview of stormwater management and the trends that are driving the movement toward Green Infrastructure. This will be followed with an overview of Low Impact Development and Green Infrastructure concepts. We will also explore the basics of rainwater harvesting including example layouts and key components, and highlight the various underground stormwater management strategies that can augment LID designs along with the latest research and performance expectations for these practices. * Contact Michael Navabi for additional information, or see the attached brochure. Who should attend? Engineering consultants, regulatory officials, municipal administrators and others interested in learning more about our states stormwater regulations, LID, LEED & BMPs. The workshop will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2011 from 9:00AM to 12:30PM in Room 140 Pfahl Executive Educational Building, 280 W Woodruff Avenue, Columbus, Ohio. Since its inception in the late 1970s, the Global Positioning System (GPS) has become the backbone of navigation, geo-location and timekeeping throughout the world. GPS is as much a part of our infrastructure as wireless communication or any other utility. In this workshop, the invited speakers, Dr. John Betz, Mr. Edward Martin and Mr. Anthony Russo, will discuss the evolution of GPS since the early days to its present configuration and future direction. In addition, how and when the GPS concept was conceived, the challenges faced by the program, technical innovations, and applications will be covered by the speakers. The current status of GPS, as well as US policies regarding the operation, modernization and availability of GPS, will be described. Finally, the future advances planned for GPS will be presented, and the challenges faced by satellite-based navigation will be discussed by the invited speakers. This workshop is free, however preregistration is highly encouraged. Open to undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and the outside community. Three (3) PDH credits will be offered for attending the entire workshop and a certificate will be provided. Go to http://ceg.osu.edu/events/2011/02/gps-workshop for information on how to register.
