From peter at centralohioasce.com Fri Sep 10 21:40:07 2010 From: peter at centralohioasce.com (Peter Narsavage) Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2010 22:40:07 -0400 Subject: [Central Ohio ASCE] Request for assistance from the Ohio Dept. of Education Message-ID: Dear Science/Engineering Professional, Because of your interest in or active engagement with science or science related businesses or programs, the Ohio Department of Education requests that you share your expertise in these areas. We are very interested in your ideas for projects or activities that students might engage in as they learn not only about science concepts but also about applications (the ?how to do and use? science). We especially want to stretch student thinking about contemporary science and real world problems requiring scientific inquiry and technological/engineering design and processes. We have developed a web-based survey that you can use to capture your ideas about what to teach about a particular science topic or how to assess what a student has learned about a topic. We would like to challenge students to integrate what they have learned by having them engage in real world applications, in developing scenarios or exploring their implications, in conducting experiments, or in other inquiry-oriented activities. We are requesting that your submissions be received by October 1, 2010 in time to review for possible inclusion in materials to be made available to Ohio teachers beginning in 2011. Additional suggestions will be placed in a database for future use. To access the web survey, go to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ScienceExpectations. First we are requesting some background and contact information from you so that we can reach you with questions or requests for further information about your suggestions. You may then select a grade level for students who might find your ideas engaging. If you are unsure about what grade level may be appropriate, there is also a section for general input. The second page lists science content for a selected grade and includes spaces for you to enter your suggestions for designing technological/engineering solutions using scientific concepts and for suggestions you may have about how students may demonstrate science knowledge. There is also an additional space for comments or concerns related to the science content. You have the opportunity to provide suggestions for more than one grade. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of our request for assistance. We will appreciate your input on how a teacher might provide experiences to students in a classroom that will engage them more deeply and enthusiastically in learning about science as it relates to the real world applications. Please contact me if you have any general or content related questions or Tracy Cindric at Tracy at TLCLearningConsultants.org if you have technical questions about the Survey Monkey website.
