High School Career Day 2013

2013 Career Day

Under the sponsorship of the ASCE Central Ohio Section, the 2013 High School Career Day took place on Tuesday, April 23. Beth Meek, Emily Wieringa and Carolyn Merry organized the event.

A welcome reception was held at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering at The Ohio State University. Two tours were conducted that related to different aspects of civil engineering. The tour in the morning session was of the Columbia Gas new headquarters building in the Nationwide District area. Norm Slick of Messer Construction gave an overview of the $25M project. The tour in the afternoon session was of the I-71/I-670 road construction project (about $200M) that was led by representatives of Kokosing (Kerry Hart), ODOT (Brad Jones) and CH2MHill (Shawn Thompson).

Between the two tours, a luncheon was held at the OSU 4-H Center Building. Carolyn Merry gave a talk about the civil engineering program at OSU and Terry Masada gave a talk about the civil engineering program at Ohio University.

There were 15 high school students participating in the program, representing the high schools of Upper Arlington, Bishop Hartley, Whitehall, Hilliard Darby, and Columbus Alternative. Each student received a hard hat and a pair of safety glasses as a memento of the event.
